It’s 2022 and we’re riding bikes.

Today is a good day and like every other good day, I’m conquering the urge to not write anything. On other days, I go to my other job. You might not know this but I’m a part-time superhero. Yes, I save the world whenever I have the time. Before you ask me about how I became a superhero and how I know the bat dude, let’s focus on the reason for the season — why we’re here.

As you well know the New Year is almost upon us. You might have started planning your New Year resolutions; all the changes you’re going to make in the coming year, all the exercises you’re going to do and all the opportunities you’ll apply for. Or you might be waiting for 2022 to come before you make these resolutions. A girl I know resolved about 3 years ago to learn to ride a bicycle and no that’s all fairytale.

The New Year is 3, 10, 28 maybe 40 days close. I can’t do the math right now. Just know it’s close by. What we do whenever we make resolutions is that we set goals. We set targets with the intent to realize them during the year. At that moment there’s loads of dopamine — we’re all pumped and 100% sure we’re going to see these resolutions through. Whatever happens after this is not our fault, in fact being a Michael Jackson is probably triggered by the rising of the sun. Yes, you’re not to be blamed because you’re a victim of circumstance.

Setting this straight, I’d have to tell you that the thing with goals is that when there are no real plans on how to actualize them, they don’t come through. James Clear makes it clear in his book, Atomic Habits, that habits or in our case goals are best met when we make visual cues for them and associate them with things we already do. Designing our immediate environment in ways that prompt us to take action helps us meet goals faster. And habits are just behaviours triggered by situational cues so ‘fro à la fre’. 😌

How does this relate to you, me, and Batman? Well, those resolutions aren’t going to “resolute” themselves. We, actually you because I’m busy saving the world, have to make our resolutions now and start working towards achieving them. Planning is a type of action and planning well goes a long way in realizing any goal. So get a calendar; get a pen and paper; get a bicycle, and take some action.

With 2022 close by, I guess we need to start deciding what our goals might be. Making preparations and putting things in place should put us in a better position to crush whatever goals we might have. Joo get? Cheerio!
